Selkirk 'A' have edge over Jed
2nds
FRIDAY night's game under the Philiphaugh floodlights,
although a friendly, saw both teams knuckle down to produce a typically bruising but free-flowing Border contest,
with the result in doubt until the final minutes of the contest.
Jed made the more positive start, exploiting a glut of penalties against the home side to gain large chunks of
territory. In the 22nd minute Pip Renwick ghosted through Selkirk's defence to send James Hogg under the posts
for a try. Tom Elliot converted.
Soon afterwards Marcus Barnett was over the line for the Souters, but was adjudged to have been held up. This pressure
was turned into points when Kiwi prop Rob Taylor crashed over from a quickly taken tap penalty. Scott Tomlinson
converted.
This score settled the home team, and following good work by Michael Jaffray and Michael McVie, fly-half Gavin
Craig dummied his way for a clever solo try. Tomlinson's conversion gave Selkirk a 14-7 halftime lead.
Jed levelled the scores soon after the break, when a tap penalty on the left touchline saw the ball whipped across
to the opposite flank for Elliot to go over near the corner the score, adding the conversion for good measure.
With Tomlinson consistently punching holes in the visitors' midfield, a crisp handling move up the left side saw
Gary Lyall up in support to touch down under the posts.
Selkirk put the result beyond doubt in the 79th minute, when another fine handling move and outside break by Craig
allowed Darren Hulme to go over in the corner for a 24-14 lead.
Jed refused to throw in the towel, however, and Scott McDonald burst over for a well deserved try, converted by
Elliot, to bring the curtain down on a highly entertaining contest.
