Try time at Philiphaugh as Selkirk
'A' continue to climb up league table
SCORING a total of 12 tries, Selkirk 'A' proved much too strong for their Berwick opponents in Saturday's Border
Farm Supplies Border Championship match at Philiphaugh. Fly-half Michael Rutherford in particular had a field day,
scoring a try and kicking seven conversions for a personal haul of 19 points.
To their credit the visitors were never less than committed throughout the 80 minutes, their efforts being rewarded
by a brace of converted tries late in the second half.
With plenty of competition for places in the Selkirk 'A' team at the present time, several players took the opportunity
on Saturday to stake a claim for regular spots in the side's starting line-up. Blindside wing-forward Scott McDonald
turned in an impressive shift both in attack and defence, while behind the scrum Ross Nixon had another solid game
in his new position of full-back.
Selkirk's full list of try scorers was as follows - Callum Marshall (2), Craig MacDougall (2), Jim Ross, Jason
Hendrie (2), Michael Rutherford, Ray Price, Darren Scott, Ross Nixon and Chris Davies.
Rutherford - who was Selkirk's captain on the day - kicked seven conversions while Darren Scott landed two. Making
their first starts of the season for Selkirk were Chris Johnston and Bruce Anderson - both welcome additions to
the playing squad.
Saturday's victory helps push Selkirk up into fourth spot in the league, and will give the young Souters every
incentive to make it three wins in a row when they take on Peebles 2nds under the Philiphaugh floodlights this
Friday night.
