Comeback men help steer Selkirk 'A' to opening league win over Kelso 2nds

A SOLID team performance saw Selkirk 'A' make a winning start to their Border Farmfeeds Border Championship campaign at Philiphaugh on Saturday with a convincing victory over Kelso.

The match marked the comeback of senior threequarters Michael Rutherford and David Cassidy, both of whom showed they had lost none of their sparkle. Rutherford had a hand in two of the Souters' four tries, while Cassidy (as befits the club's single season record points scorer) kicked three conversions and two penalties to underline the home team's ascendancy.

Home coach Ewen Robbie must have been pleased by the way his young players coped against bigger and more experienced opponents, with the back row of Matt Robertson, Callum Johnston and John Everitt proving particularly effective at keeping the Tweedsiders' breakaways in check.

Selkirk took the lead in the 12th minute from a Cassidy penalty, and shortly afterwards the centre added the conversion to a try by teenage wing Alex Godsmark following a line-out close to the visitors' line. Just before halftime Kelso hit back with a try from Ross Tinlin, making the interval score 10-5 in the home side's favour.

A try from full-back Darren Scott early in the second period extended Selkirk's lead, but two successful penalty kicks by the Black Whites, when the home team were down to 12 men, narrowed the deficit to 17-11.

Selkirk skipper Fraser Jack steadied the ship with a typically nippy touchdown, and after Cassidy had successfully kicked his second successful penalty of the afternoon, John Everitt secured Selkirk's bonus point with his side's fourth try.
